Shut Down Adelanto Coalition Sounds the Alarm as DHS Purchases Adelanto Detention Facilities for $950 Million

Adelanto, CA — The Shut Down Adelanto Coalition is sounding the alarm following the Department of Homeland Security’s purchase of two immigrant detention facilities; Adelanto ICE Processing Center and the High Desert View Annex, in Adelanto for $950 million from GEO Group, a private prison corporation that will continue operating the facilities under its existing contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The federal government has now spent nearly $3.2 billion purchasing privately owned detention facilities, with the majority of those purchases taking place in California. This unprecedented spending comes on the heels of Congress approving $45 billion for immigration detention as part of President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

“This sale should be a red alert for everyone who cares about accountability and the safety of people in immigration detention. The federal government is spending nearly a billion dollars to purchase these facilities, but there has been no indication that this will bring greater transparency or meaningful oversight. In fact, with GEO continuing to operate the facilities, we have serious concerns about who will be watching the people responsible for what happens inside. We are calling on Congress to cancel this contract and reject any further investment in a detention system that has failed to provide the transparency and accountability our communities deserve,” said Javier Hernandez, Executive Director at the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice.

The Shut Down Adelanto Coalition is particularly concerned that transferring ownership of the facilities to the federal government could make meaningful public oversight even more difficult. Regardless of who owns the buildings, GEO Group will continue to operate them, leaving questions about transparency, accountability, and the treatment of people detained inside.

Organizations are calling on elected officials, community leaders, advocates, journalists, and the public to demand answers about how these facilities will be operated, what oversight mechanisms will be in place, and how the federal government will be held accountable for the treatment and conditions of people detained in Adelanto.
