San Bernardino, CA – Today the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice was recognized as“Nonprofit of the Year” by Senator Connie M. Leyva for the 20th State Senate District. Each year, State Senators from across California recognize non-profit organizations that are engaging in vital work to the local community and constituencies that are served.
In her announcement Senator Leyva expressed: “Our region is so fortunate to have the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice working day and night offering its varied and vital services to individuals and families that need this help at a time when our federal government oftentimes scapegoats immigrants and uses them for political purposes.”(1)
In response, Javier Hernandez, Director of the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice, issued the following statement:
“Our commitment is to improve the lives of immigrants across the Inland Empire. We are excited and proud that this work is being recognized by such an important ally in the fight for immigrant rights and dignity for our community. Immigrants are under attack – from the unlawful and egregious violations of human rights happening in the Adelanto Detention facility or the continued presence of CBP and ICE in San Bernardino – we will not stop fighting for our community’s right to live without fear.
Now more than ever immigrant communities need the support from local officials and our allies to ensure that no immigrant family gets left behind. COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on the economic fabric of our community and we must ensure that we do everything possible to include them in unemployment and California benefits like MediCal.
