COVID 19: Adelanto City Council Refuses to Postpone Hearing on Immigrant Detention Facility Expansion
Adelanto, CA – The Adelanto City Clerk has confirmed that they plan to move forward with the March 25th city council meeting defying state and national directives to limit all gatherings of more than 10 people. This day was originally set as a hearing to discuss the Appeal of the Planning Commission decision to approve Conditional Use Permit 96-11 (Modification No. 2). This appeal was submitted by the ACLU and the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice on March 2nd.
“We are joining the Dignity not Detention Coalition in asking the Governor to use emergency authority to block this permit. The city of Adelanto’s decision will result in a public health disaster. At the last hearing we witnessed the presence of GEO executives that flew in from different states, GEO guards and employees, advocates from across the state of California, and community/families from different SoCal regions. The city once again is prioritizing this big money corporation rather than the safety and wellbeing of hard working community and families.”
